Every year on October 28th, Greece, Cyprus, and Greek communities around the world celebrate Oxi Day, which literally means “Day of No”. This important national holiday is filled with parades and fun, but it’s also a time to remember bravery and national pride. Let’s explore why we celebrate Oxi Day and how you can join in the festivities!

Why We Celebrate Oxi Day

Oxi Day marks a significant moment in history. On October 28, 1940, Greek Prime Minister

Ioannis Metaxas stood strong against Italy’s demands to let their troops enter Greece. He

famously replied, “Alors, c’est la guerre!” or “Then it is War!” This bold response inspired

people all over Greece to shout “Oxi” (No!), in defiance. It’s a day to honor courage and unity.

How We Celebrate Today

Oxi Day is a national holiday, so schools and many businesses are closed, allowing families to celebrate together. Cafes and restaurants, however, are lively and welcoming, so make sure to reserve a table ahead of time, especially after the parades.

In cities across Greece, you’ll find lively parades, with the biggest ones in Thessaloniki. In

Athens, the main parade starts at 11 a.m. from Zappeion and goes past the Parliament at

Syntagma Square. Schoolchildren march in their uniforms, and military groups join in too. It’s a beautiful sight filled with pride as people wave Greek flags and cheer.

During the celebrations, the streets are filled with blue and white flags. Street vendors sell treats like cotton candy and snacks, making the atmosphere even more festive. After the parade, many locals gather in cafes to continue the celebration, sharing good food and laughter.

Special Treats for Visitors

If you’re in Athens for Oxi Day, you have a special opportunity! Entrance to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum is free on this day. There may be limited spots available, but you can secure your visit by emailing us to book it for you.
